Yesterday, we posted on which countries Americans relocate to the most. Today we are posting on which countries relocate the most employees to the United States. The biggest change over last years results is the number of Germans relocating to the United States for work. For the first time in 5 years, Germany tops the United Kingdom as sending the most employees to work in the United States. This change was a result of a 24.9% rise in the number of employees relocating from Germany to the the United States, while both the United Kingdom and China saw notable declines in the number of employees relocating to the US for work.

The reason for the additional international relocation opportunities from Germany to the United States might be because the German economy is growing at almost 5% percent a year now in spite of the financial situation throughout the Eurozone. The Germans are using this as an opporutnity to find new investments and business opportunities throughout the world. Additionally, there are some reports that Germany is even stronger than some of their Chinese competitors in specific niche industries. Therefore, it might be that rise in the number of Germans relocating to the United States is a positive reflection on the German economy as whole rather than a positive reflection on new opportunities that relate to growth in the US economy.

Recently it was reported that the number of employees taking a relocation has risen to its highest level in the last two years. Where do you think most of these people are moving to?

In July, UniGroup Worldwide put out their “Migration” report that was cited by the Wall Street Journal. This report highlighted which countries American’s relocated to from the US, as well as what countries people are relocating from to the US. The results indicated some interesting statistics which included a rise of 46.7% of the numbers of American’s relocating to China for work over the last 3 years. However, the UK still receives the highest percentage of international relocations from the US at 24%.

This chart indicates that although the UK still receives the most assignees, China is quickly growing in the number of employees taking an international relocation to the country. The growth in China is to be expected with an average of 10% growth rates in their economy over the last 30 years which has no signs of slowing down. With this type of growth many employees are interested in taking an international relocation to China because of employees looking for a chance to go global to advance their careers. As these growth rates continue more companies will be looking toward leveraging local leadership in China to advance into other Asian emerging markets as well. Additionally companies will continue to focus on relocating employees to the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) as well to expand into their local and surrounding emerging markets. As an indicator of this Brazil made the top 15 list for the first time in the last 4 years.

In a recent study by Aviva UK Health, they asked Brits what would be the things that they might miss most from their home country from taking an international relocation. Many of these answers might be relevant to any country.

How to feel at home when you are living in a foreign country?

• Join an Expat Community – Hundreds of thousands of employees relocate around the world every year. There is a good chance that there are other people from your home country in your current location who are also looking for a community of people who understand each other. There are many great sites out there to help you with this search. Among them there is BritishExpats.com, and ExpatExchange. You may also want to try Googling your location plus the words “Expat Community” to see what other options might be available.
• Watch TV Episodes – Through the wonders of the internet you might be able to buy, rent or stream many of your favorite TV shows directly on the instant TV episodes section of either Amazon.com or iTunes.
• Find your Favorite Foods – Though this might be a bit of a stretch in some locations in other locations (often with the help of an expat community or with some internet research) finding your favorite foods from home might not be as difficult as it once may have been. Here is a word of advice: determine the value of the food items to you. If they are imported they might be significantly more expensive than they were in your home country.
• Connect with Friends and Family – through the use of such VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) tools such as Skype you might be able to not only talk to friends and family at long distance you can also SEE them using the video conferencing features (with a webcam) that are available either at the price of FREE or at a very low cost. Scheduling these types of calls can really connect you with your home.

In a recent print edition of The Economist, they cover the new phenomena of Chinese expats being sent to the west for investment opportunities. It has been fairly common in recent years for companies from the west to send their brightest executives to China to explore new markets for their products and services or to find suppliers but today as China’s economic growth continues Chinese companies are increasingly sending their employees abroad as well.

This change of perspective from Chinese firms illustrates how economies continue to globalize:

China’s spectacular growth over the past three decades has prompted hordes of businesspeople to jump onto aeroplanes and move house. Western multinationals have sent many of their most ambitious executives to the country, to find new suppliers, set up factories or sell jet engines and whisky to the Chinese.

In recent years a swelling number of expatriates have also moved the other way. Chinese firms are increasingly global. They scramble for oil and copper in Africa. They scout for investment opportunities in America and Europe. They are starting to set up offices throughout the world. Naturally, they are sending out Chinese executives to run them.

Expatriate Chinese executives are a relatively new phenomenon, and a sign of Chinese strength. Previous waves of emigrants fled China because the country was poor, violent and despotically ruled. They sought a better life elsewhere, and usually found it. They arrived with nothing, prospered through wit and hard work, and often settled permanently abroad.

The new Chinese expatriates are different. They are sent abroad because the Chinese firms they work for are expanding. They arrive on foreign shores with the security of a job and a salary. Their assignments are temporary: they expect to return after a few years.
